Summer fun can take a toll on your hair. From the chlorine in the pools, to minerals in lakes, the salt in the ocean, & of course the sun. They build up, dry out, & in general damage your hair. So here are 4 tips to help keep your hair from being beaten up by summer!
- Clarify: After being in the pool, lake, or ocean you should shampoo your hair with a gentle clarifying shampoo or a shampoo that is specifically for after swimming. The sun & water can take a real toll on your hair. It leaves it dry, rough, & often very unmanageable. I recommend PhytoPlage Hair & Body Rehydrating Shampoo. It gently removes chlorine, sand, salt, & sunscreen residue from your hair and body while hydrating your hair and body!
- Hydrating Conditioner or Mask: The sun, pool, lakes, & ocean dry your hair out! Use a hydrating conditioner or mask (if a conditioner is not enough) to replenish what your hair is lacking after all the fun in the sun! I recommend PhytoPlage After Sun Recovery Mask. It hydrates, nourishes, & repairs even the most sun damaged hair! If you use the PhytoPlage Shampoo & have fine hair, you may find no conditioner or mask is needed.
- Hair Sunscreen: If you are constantly at the beach or in the pool, then PhytoPlage Protective Sun Oil is your new best friend! It is a water-resistant oil to protect hair & safeguard your color from sun, chlorine, & salt water! It also moisturizes, softens, & gives you a sexy “wet look” while nourishing your hair!
- In Salon Treatment: If you get your color done professionally & at the beach, pool, or lake often you should do a detox/clarifying treatment done before your color. You should be doing this type of treatment before every color, but especially in the summer. These types of treatments not only give your stylist a clean slate, but help remove minerals that can cause a chemical reaction with the color. Talk with your stylist about doing this type of treatment. I typically will use my color company’s pre-chemical shampoo to remove heavy build up before chemical services. I recommend at the end of the summer to do a detox & hydrate treatment. For this service I use a gentle clarifying shampoo. I let it work its magic for a good 20-30 minutes, rinse it, & follow it with a hydrating mask appropriate for my client’s hair type. This removes all product & water mineral build up & hydrates my client’s hair. It’s comparable to wiping a chalk board down with a wet towel instead of a used chalk board eraser. I do this service as a stand alone, before a cut, or before a color service. Now if your stylist does a treatment similar to this but it takes a shorter or longer amount of time, don’t worry. Your stylist is probably using a different product that requires a different protocol. Some of my clients only need the treatment to work it’s magic for 10-15 minutes because they have less build up. Every client is different & every treatment protocol is different.
These recommendations are recommendations I give to my clients in the salon. There are a lot of products out on the market. The products I recommend are products that I work with & carry for clients at the salon. That does not mean they are the only products that give the above specific results. There are lots of clarifiers, water/chlorine treatments/shampoos, hydrating masks, etc. Above all, I HIGHLY recommend you talk with your stylist about what treatments & products are best for your hair & life style!
